Ready

When the student is ready the teacher appears ~ Buddhist proverb

I keep hearing the same messages lately so it must mean I am ready. Ready to release. Ready to surrender. I think it is a positive way to look at things and patterns that may have been hanging around for years. Instead of saying 'here we go again', or seeing it as confirmation that we are 'bad', to instead look at 'it' and say "Okay this is my opportunity to finally let this go".

Letting go. A loaded statement if ever there was one, what does it actually mean? To me it means giving yourself permission to feel your feelings, not judge them and by feeling them, you process them and let them go, naturally, without effort. You do not have to swim upstream against the current and struggle, that is not letting go, that is hanging on. In the word 'trying', struggling is implicit (at least to me). Stop trying, just feel. Things come up for you to let them go, not to put you through the same trauma over and over again. We don't get that though. I think this phenomenon is related to feeling worthless, unsafe or undeserving. We believe that 'bad' things are there to prove to us that we are worthless instead of seeing them as opportunities to finally heal our sense of self. Our sense of being love, being peace, being anything that is good (God).

If you are worried about what words to use with EFT, in the set up statement and in the rounds, just use whatever words that come to you when you are describing what you are going through or feeling. There are no 'right' words, whatever words are in your mind are the 'right' words for you. Exactly the right words. They are your wisdom. Trust them. It is you sending messages to you. It is you helping you. It is you wanting to remind you that you are perfect, whole and complete. And loved.

Kahlil Gibran - The Prophet

Then a priestess said, Speak to us of Prayer.
And he answered, saying:
You pray in your distress and in your need, would that you might pray also in the fullness of your joy and in your days of abundance.
For what is prayer but the expansion of yourself into the living ether?
And if it is for your comfort to pour your darkness into space, it is also for your delight to pour forth the dawning of your heart.
And if you cannot but weep when your soul summons you to prayer, she should spur you again and again, though weeping, until you shall come laughing.
When you pray you rise to meet in the air those who are praying at that very hour, and whom save in prayer you may not meet.
Therefore let your visit to that temple invisible be for naught but ecstasy and sweet communion.
For if you should enter the temple for no other purpose than asking you shall not receive:
And if you should enter into it to humble yourself you shall not be lifted:
Or even if you should enter into it to beg for the good of others you shall not be heard.
It is enough that you enter the temple invisible.

I cannot teach you how to pray in words.
God listens not to your words save when He Himself utters them through your lips.
And I cannot teach you the prayer of the seas and the forests and the mountains.
But you who are born of the mountains and the forests and the seas can find their prayer in your heart,
And if you but listen in the stillness of the night you shall hear them saying in silence:
Our God, who art our winged self, it is thy will in us that willeth.
"It is thy desire in us that desireth.
"It is thy urge in us that would turn our nights, which are thine, into days, which are thine also.
"We cannot ask thee for aught, for thou knowest our needs before they are born in us:
"Thou art our need; and in giving us more of thyself thou givest us all".

Healing Words

Healing Words

I was listening to Oprah’s Soul Series the other day and her interview with Dr Larry Dossey who wrote a book entitled Healing Words: The Power of Prayer and the Practice of Medicine, in 1993. He is a lovely man and I really enjoyed the interview as I have heard so much about him. At the time he wrote the book, there was only one scientific study to validate that prayer heals but now there are over 21 studies, and counting. It does not matter whether you have one person praying for you or a hundred, what seems to matter is the quality of the prayer, its sincerity and intention. If the energies of our intention are in line with those of God (intention itself) our prayers will heal or will remind us that we are healed and whole, we have just forgotten that truth. I believe that when we act from a place of Love and consequently are Love, we remember who we are and we reach a place in the person being prayed for which also recognises that they are love. Isn’t this what it means to love and be loved? Because God is Love, we are Love and that is the creative, kind, loving, beautiful, expansive, abundant and receptive force that reminds us we are healed.

Iyanla Vanzant - Until Today

Until Today is one of my favourite books by Iyanla Vanzant, one of my favourite authors. She always hits the nail on the head.

'I will know peace when ... I examine what I feel beneath what I am feeling.

It can be frightening to experience and express anger. Even more frightening is the hurt that caused the anger in the first place. When you get hurt, you get angry. You believe that the anger is directed outward, toward the person who hurt you. The truth is, anger as a response to hurt is always directed inward. You are angry that you trusted someone who turned out to be the wrong person to trust. You are angry that you loved too much. Cared too much. Because it is hard to admit these things to yourself, about yourself, you point the finger out there, at them! The challenge is to recognise that it is much easier to be angry at someone than it is to say, "You hurt me". When you are angry, you are in control. Control is what you believe you must have to avoid being hurt.

Being hurt is a sign that there is something in you that requires your attention. Being hurt is a sign that you have been engaging in a pattern of behaviour that no longer serves who you are. When you get hurt, it means that you have a tender spot you have been resisting the need to address. Along comes some unsuspecting soul, doing what they do, in the way they do it, and they stick their finger in the tender spot.

It makes you angry that you didn't see it coming. You are angry because you believe you should have known better. Anger in response to a hurt is a clear sign that you were hurt to begin with. You need to stop being angry long enough to examine your own heart and mind.

Until today, you may have believed that someone you trusted or loved has done something to make you angry. Just for today, lay your anger aside. Look beneath the anger to find the hurt that you have buried to avoid dealing with it.

Today I am digging up old hurts and putting them to rest!'

Psychological trauma or unexperienced experience

Excerpt of an article*(see below) by Irish psychiatrist Ivor Browne:
I call this sphere. . . the sphere of "between." Though being realized in very different degrees, it is a primal category of human reality. This is where the genuine third alternative must begin.
Martin Buber (1938)

My thesis is such that it is hard to understand why it is not already part of our everyday knowledge. Simply, when something happens to us, we do not experience all of it at once. Experiencing is a process that takes place over time. It involves neurophysiological and somatic work on the part of the person to whom the experience happens. Further, the amount of work that is involved depends on how serious the nature of this external challenge is and several other internal factors that I will go into later.

I have perused much of the voluminous literature that has appeared in recent years in relation to post-traumatic stress disorder as well as the literature on traumatic neurosis written during the nineteenth century. And yet, this simple awareness that experiencing something is a process that takes place within us over time seems to have been missed. Simply, when something happens to us we do not experience all of it at once. This is all the more strange because if we consider our everyday experience of life, we know that if something disturbing happens to us -- say, for example, an unpleasant argument with someone on a Friday afternoon -- we may find ourselves going over and over it during the weekend and unable to escape the unpleasant feeling attached to it or resolve the problem. But then, having slept on it for a couple of nights, we wake up on Monday morning no longer troubled, even though we may have had no further communication with the person involved. Somehow the problem is now solved. This to me is clear evidence that some work has been going on within us during this couple of days so that the experience is now integrated into ourselves, is becoming memory, and has moved from something in the present, something unsettled and current, into the past.

There appear to be two main reasons why this simple phenomenon of everyday experience has been overlooked. The first reason involves certain historical factors that surrounded the early work of Sigmund Freud, now just a hundred years ago, for it was he who first clearly drew attention to the whole issue of traumatic neurosis. The second reason has to do with the way in which we use language. I would like to deal with each of the reasons for this oversight in more detail. Read more

Antonio Damasio and Emotions

A blurb from the book The Feeling of What Happens; Body, Emotion and the Making of Consciousness, says "One of the world's leading experts on the neurophysiology of emotions, Professor Damasio shows how our consciousness, our sense of being, arose out of the development of emotion". This book is a fantastic read for anyone interested in this subject.

EFT clears the way to Love.

Accepting where and who you are right now can be difficult. But honestly it is the only place to start from. If you can love and accept yourself exactly as you are right now you can offer this same gift to others. You will automatically forgive yourself and others (in fact there won't even be a need to, you will just accept everything as it is) and you will realise that nothing that anyone has ever done had anything to do with you but everything to do with them (and how much they accepted and loved themselves) and vice versa. For-giveness is a state of mind and not something we "do".

Use the negative beliefs that come up when you say "I love myself". They are an opportunity to finally clear the way to Love. Gary Craig calls these beliefs tail enders, and you can use these tail enders in your set up statement. It's actually a great way to find core issues!

Helen Keller

The best and most beautiful things in the world cannot be seen or even touched - they must be felt with the heart.

Once I knew only darkness and stillness... my life was without past or future... but a little word from the fingers of another fell into my hand that clutched at emptiness, and my heart leaped to the rapture of living ~ Helen Keller

Telling the Secret

When you plant a tree
every leaf that grows will tell you,
what you sow will bear fruit.
So if you have any sense, my friend
don't plant anything but love,
you show your worth by what you seek.
Water flows to those who want purity
wash your hands of all desires and
come to the table of Love.

Do you want me to tell you a secret?
The flowers attract the most beautiful lover
with their sweet smile and scent.
If you let God weave the verse in your poem
people will read it forever.

Undigested experiences

We ingest everything, not just food. We ingest experiences, people, emotions, our environment, etcetera. Have you ever had the feeling of the straw that broke the camel's back? It's usually a sign that we are 'full up'. There is no room for any more and we can't take any more! This is because we have not properly digested previous experiences along with their accompanying emotions. The emotions and experiences have frozen in our bodies, for later retrieval and digestion. This overflow effect can lead to dis-ease in the body and mind. We need to learn to feel our feelings at some stage in our lives. We need to give ourselves permission to do that.

When a feeling comes up, pay attention. It is there for a reason. We usually resist the feelings that, in particular, make us feel afraid or even terrified. Usually these feelings are not triggered by a present event but by a past traumatic event in which we reacted, for the very first time, in that way. The way we have been reacting since. It is like a knee jerk reaction. What we sometimes don't realise is that the feeling is coming up for recognition and acknowledgement and not necessarily to put us through the event again. We often need help with this, a friend or a counsellor. EFT is a fantastic help because when you react or have strong uncomfortable emotions, you can just tap, you don't even need to say anything as you are 'tuned in'. The karate chop point is the small intestine meridian, which is where we assimilate all ingested material (including experiences and emotions). The fact that this point corrects psychological reversal is significant. Maybe it also helps us to digest and assimilate what we previously found 'hard to take' or did not believe.

Pay attention to your feelings and emotions, they represent the child in you and all that child wants is love.

How you view yourself

How you view yourself (what you believe about yourself) is the filter through which you live your life, view your life and how you interact with and view others. The truth is you are worthy, lovable and a divine child of God. If you have been told otherwise or you believe otherwise, change how you see yourself. As Kahlil Gibran says "children are life's longing for itself ", which means life wanted you here, even if you hold the belief that no one else did.

William Blake writes "If the doors of perception were cleansed everything would appear to man as it is: Infinite ".

If anything comes up as you read these words, use EFT to dissolve anything that no longer serves you.

Your body speaks your mind

How would you describe what you are experiencing to someone else?

What words would you use to describe your headache, back pain, arthritis or depression? Using these same words in the set up statement in EFT can be invaluable to dissolving the cause of the ailment. For example if you use the word claustrophobic to describe a headache, it may lead you to a formative experience where you felt claustrophobic and so on.

Usually we describe what is going on in our lives when we do this exercise.

So describe how you are feeling to someone else (or to yourself, writing this down may be better) and use those adjectives/words in your EFT set up and rounds.

Rumi

I was going to tell you my story
but waves of pain drowned my voice.
I tried to utter a word but my thoughts
became fragile and shattered like glass.
Even the largest ship can capsize
in the stormy sea of love,
let alone my feeble boat
which shattered to pieces leaving me nothing
but a strip of wood to hold on to.
Small and helpless, rising to heaven
on one wave of love and falling with the next
I don't even know if I am or I am not.
When I think I am, I find myself worthless,
when I think I am not, I find my value.
Like my thoughts, I die and rise again each day
so how can I doubt the resurrection?
Tired of hunting for love in this world,
at last I surrender in the valley of love
and become free.

Feel what you feel

Give yourself permission to feel what you feel. You don't have to say anything to anyone or act on what you feel. Giving yourself permission to feel what you feel, without any judgement, is an act of respect for what you feel, an act of respect for yourself and an act of respect for the piece of God that you are. If what you feel causes you fear, or you are afraid of 'going there' tap on that fear until it dissolves with EFT.

You will be amazed at how calm and peaceful you will feel if you allow yourself to feel whatever you are feeling without judgement. This allows us to 'process' our feelings so they don't bury themselves in our bodies, hearts and minds in dis-ease.

Energy follows thought

Listen to your body and hear what it is trying to tell you. If you have pains and aches what are they trying to tell you? What part of your body is affected? What is the function of that body part? Is there a metaphor there? For example the back gives us support, so if you are having back pain, where in your life do you not feel supported? When did the pains start? Was there something going on in your life at the time the back pain started?

Paying attention to your body and communicating with it is exactly what it wants! The act of paying attention (sending energy in the form of thoughts) is very powerful, whether that energy is positive or negative. We usually get frustrated and angry with our bodies when they don't do what we think they 'should'. We rarely show kindness to the body part "acting up" and ask it, what are you trying to tell me?

If you are not listening to your body, firstly it will whisper, then talk and if you are still not listening it will shout! The body communicates in all sorts of ways, discomfort, gut feelings, fear etc. Symptoms usually appear to get your attention. If you listen you will hear them and be able to do something about them before they "worsen". Treat your body with kindness and send any symptoms understanding and love. Ask the symptoms what they want and then give it to them.

Mirror work

When you are applying EFT to yourself, looking into your own eyes in a mirror while tapping is very powerful and effective. There is something about looking into your eyes and seeing their expression that touches you and helps you to really feel and tune into the issue you are tapping on.

Particularly when you say the words in the set-up 'I deeply and completely accept myself" and look into your own eyes, you will see if there is any resistance to this statement such as 'No I don't!'. You can then tap on that lack of self acceptance and ask yourself what specific events led to you feeling that way. Or indeed whether it was a decision you made about yourself due to something someone said or did.

An excellent question to find core issues

In the above article found on http://www.emofree.com, Kathy Atkinson uses the question “What decision about myself or the world would I have made at the time?” to uncover core decisions we have made about ourselves and who we think we are because of events that have been traumatic and painful for us. This question is very useful when used with the personal peace procedure.

When something traumatic happens to us, we not only have to deal with the trauma and hurt and the event itself but usually we also make a decision about who we are as a result. For example a child is hit by a parent and has to deal with the trauma and hurt that that causes. But often that child will also make a decision about him or herself that will 'colour' the way they live their lives and how they view themselves and subsequently how others treat them. For example the child could make the decision as a result of being hit that:

1. I must be bad (why else would I be hit?)
2. I am unlovable
3. I have to be a good girl (so I don't get hit again)
4. It is my fault, I am to blame (and take on too much responsibility in their lives as a result)
5. It is not safe to be me

The child (and later the adult) will live from these decisions as well as having the trauma of the incident that caused them to make these decisions in the first place. Asking this question is invaluable in addition to dealing with painful events, because once these decisions are realised and brought into conscious awareness you can use EFT to dissolve these false ideas of who you are. I believe asking this question will really help to completely collapse and dissolve the emotional charge we have around certain events so we can be free of them.

Resistance

Resistance is any thought (or belief) that is in the way of you living the life you want to live. When you are not living the life you want to live, you can be sure there is resistance in you to your good. All of these thoughts and beliefs are tappable with EFT.

How do we find these resistant thoughts? The personal peace procedure by Gary Craig, found on http://www.emofree.com is an excellent way to find thoughts and beliefs that are creating resistance to our success, peace and happiness. Tapping on these core beliefs will dissolve any resistance you may have. Feeling 'deserving' is probably one of the most common resistant thoughts we have. Other common resistant thoughts are not being good enough (i.e. bad) and a sense of not belonging.

Another thought on resistance that Wayne Dyer makes is: Any thought that is not in alignment with the seven faces of intention (Creativity, Kindness, Love, Beauty, Expansion, Abundance and Receptivity) is a resistant thought.

Children Learn What They Live

If a child lives with criticism, she learns to condemn.
If a child lives with hostility, he learns to fight.
If a child lives with ridicule, she learns to be shy.
If a child lives with shame, he learns to feel guilt.
If a child lives with tolerance, she learns to be patient.
If a child lives with encouragement, he learns confidence.
If a child lives with praise, she learns to appreciate.
If a child lives with fairness, he learns justice.
If a child lives with security, she learns to have faith.
If a child lives with approval, he learns to like himself.
If a child lives with acceptance and friendship, he or she learns to find love in the world.

Stress

We all experience stress from time to time. However prolonged or chronic stress (both biological and psychological) has a detrimental effect on our lives in so many ways. One of the worst physical side effects is the effect of high cortisol levels on the body (which is produced by the adrenal glands when we are under stress). It suppresses the immune system, leads to weight gain, reduces the amount of serotonin produced in the brain which can lead to depression, increases blood pressure, increases blood sugar so the pancreas has to release more insulin to deal with the increase in blood sugar and on and on.

Meditation has been scientifically proven to help with the effects of stress. Noticing our breath has an immediate calming effect on the body, it normalises the heart beat and increases feel good hormones and decreases the stress hormones. It also brings us into the present moment and out of the past and the future where many of our stressful feelings lie. Exercise is also essential, try and take a walk in the sunshine, vitamin D is essential for good health, especially in the winter when it can help in supporting our immune systems against colds and the flu. Eat well, unprocessed foods as close to their natural state as possible. Laugh, laughter really is a very good medicine!

And last but not least use EFT (Emotional Freedom Techniques) on the reasons and feelings causing your stress. Dissolve and collapse beliefs (which only affect us because they feel true) that no longer serve you with EFT.

Heart Meditation

The heart has an electromagnetic field 5,000 times stronger than the brain's electric field. Why is that? I don't think it is an accident. Life really is the best designer!

Author Iyanla Vanzant calls the heart 'your map' for your life. Meditating or even just putting your attention on your heart regulates and normalises the heart beat (and your breathing) and creates a calming effect on the body by raising levels of feel good hormones and lowering levels of stress hormones.

Sit quietly and breathe into your heart, follow your breath in and out of your heart or repeat a mantra. It doesn't matter, whatever you feel comfortable with. Do this for at least ten minutes. With regular and/or daily practice you will notice more peace and happiness in your life.

Dr Masaru Emoto - The Hidden Messages in Water

Dr Emoto has been conducting research on how molecules of water are affected by our thoughts, words, and feelings. He has also been photographing the evidence of this research. By exposing water to different words, the water produces differently shaped crystals accordingly. Words such as love and gratitude produce the most beautiful water crystals such as in the photograph above. This indicates that love and gratitude are essential to all life. Words such as anger and hate produce very irregular and murky coloured crystals. He has also conducted the experiments using music. Heavy metal music had the same effect on the crystals such as the words, hate and jealousy and produced irregular crystals, whereas classical music produced beautiful crystals.

Since our bodies are composed of 70 to 80% water the impact of this research on us cannot be underestimated. Our thoughts affect everything, even the water in our bodies, which is a carrier of information. Try writing something nice on a piece of paper and wearing it next to your skin. Try thinking thoughts of gratitude and love. Louise Hay says 'The universe loves grateful people'.

Your love is teaching me how to kneel

This is a line from the song 'Vertigo' by U2.

I love this line, I think its meaning is really beautiful. I think it means surrender your ego to Love. Forget about being right and open your heart.

This is an excerpt from The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran about Love which I think says basically the same thing:

When love beckons to you, follow him,
Though his ways are hard and steep.
And when his wings enfold you yield to him,
Though the sword hidden among his pinions may wound you.
And when he speaks to you believe in him,
Though his voice may shatter your dreams as the north wind lays waste the garden.
For even as love crowns you so shall he crucify you. Even as he is for your growth so is he for your pruning.
Even as he ascends to your height and caresses your tenderest branches that quiver in the sun,
So shall he descend to your roots and shake them in their clinging to the earth.

All these things shall love do unto you that you may know the secrets of your heart, and in that knowledge become a fragment of Life's heart.

Learning, Rhythm and Feelings

This is an excerpt of a paper entitled 'Learning, Rhythm and Feelings' that I wrote for a research seminar in the Dublin Institute of Technology. One of the themes in the paper was that more efficient learning takes place when the learner is in a positive frame of mind and feels good. For example, when we recall a memory (usually triggered by the emotion that was encoded along with the memory in the brain) we also remember how we felt at the time of the memory (or event). This poses no problem for us when the emotion was a happy one. What EFT can do is help with the unhappy or uncomfortable emotions stored along with the memory of a particular event(s). We never forget the events but the emotional charge is dissolved. This is the beauty of EFT. This is also the reason why EFT is more effective when we are "tuned into" the emotion.

'Contrary to commonly held myths such as we only use ten percent of our brain, we now know that the brain functions (w)holistically, albeit in a more complex way than what was originally imagined and known. Imaging research has identified and nominated various regions in the brain where the processing, creation and storage of long-term memories occurs. The processing and subsequent storage of these memories is directly related to, and depends to a large extent, on the emotions and feelings present at the time of learning, both positive and negative. During PET scans, electrical activity in the amygdalae, and the presence of certain hormones, suggest that an emotional message is encoded when a memory is being processed for long-term storage. Memories are reconstructed during recall, so it stands to reason that the brain will later (re)construct and (re)call these memories with greater ease, if the memories have been presented for storage as an assortment of multi-modal material embedded with emotional messages.' - Noreen Barron.

WHY TAPPING WORKS: Speculations from the Observable Brain

WHY TAPPING WORKS: Speculations from the Observable Brain

by Ronald A. Ruden, M.D., Ph.D.

ABSTRACT
A new therapy for phobias, PTSD, addictive behaviors and other psychological issues was first described by Dr. Roger Callahan and involves thought activation of the problem followed by tapping on certain acupoints in a specific sequence.  For most cases, the problems were reportedly cured in a matter of minutes. We speculate on a neuroanatomical and neurophysiological mechanism for this technique. We propose that tapping and other sensory stimulation increase serotonin in both the prefrontal cortex and the amygdala. The success of this technique requires that glutamate be first increased in the circuit by activating affect.  We suggest the name 'Affect Activation/Sensory Stimulation' to encompass this general approach. AA/SS represents a paradigm shift for the treatment of these problems. Read on

My ideas on what Psychological Reversal is

Any feeling or emotion that is not Creative, Kind, Loving, Beautiful, Expansive, Abundant and Receptive leads to psychological reversal. Psychological reversal, in energy terms, literally means a reversal of our energy system, so things feel "out of whack" with energy flowing the "wrong" way or becoming stuck and stagnating. As a result we feel depressed, stressed out, angry and generally not happy.

We emanated from Intention. Intention intended us here. If the seven faces of Intention are Creative, Kind, Loving, Beautiful, Expansive, Abundant and Receptive. We are also those seven faces.

What stops us from knowing that we are these seven faces of intention are false beliefs about who we really are. The beliefs don't feel false of course, they feel very true. We think these beliefs are who we are. Beliefs such as: I'm not good enough, I'm a bad person or I'm not lovable and so on. Sometimes this PR is referred to as secondary gain. For example we say we want to give up smoking and after testing, we find we are psychologically reversed. We actually don't want to give up cigarettes. Well maybe we really do want to stop smoking but the real issue could be we are afraid of what 'not smoking' will bring up, all the fears and anxieties that smoking sedates and that we have been avoiding facing. Wayne Dyer has written a book called There is a Spiritual Solution to Every Problem. This is so true, because no matter what our background or what we have been through, the truth remains that we emanated from love, so we are love. Isn't this what we are all searching for? Knowing that we are loved and lovable?

St Teresa Of Avila

This magnificent refuge is inside you. Enter. Shatter the darkness that shrouds the doorway. Be bold. Be humble. Put away the incense and forget the incantations they taught you. Ask no permission from the authorities. Close your eyes and follow your breath to the still place that leads to the invisible path that leads you home.

Intention meditation

What is energy medicine and how does it work?
